Regular Instructional Workshops |
Two-day instructional workshops are essential for any who are considering setting
up a Centering model or for those in the early stages of running groups. These workshops are scheduled
frequently in different locations and may be organized by umbrella agencies,
community health centers or public clinics, private practices or by groups
of health care providers such as physicians, midwives, or advanced practice nurses. Since instituting Centering is such a major change for the whole system. CHI recommendes that workshop attendance be approached in one of three ways: 1. Sending one person (an "advanced scout") to a workshop to get basic information that will help a site with early planning. This should be viewed as the first step in eventually getting all agency staff trained. 2. Identification of a Pre-Planning/Steering Group which will be responsible for the planning, implementation, and on-going nurturing of Centering at the site. Composition of personnel at sites differs depending on the size of the site and local needs. But, in general, this group should include: an administrator, at least two health care providers, the nursing supervisor, medical director, a front-desk clerk, a medical assistant, a social worker, and a consumer. This group (with the exception of the consumer representative) should attend the workshop together. 3. Having a workshop sponsored by the agency; all people involved with caring for the patient population should attend. The assumption is that service delivery will not occur on the workshop days so that all people can be fully attentive to the workshop. Workshop Objectives: 1.To understand the basic principles underlying a group approach to prenatal care 2.To understand Centering Pregnancy as a particular model of group prenatal care 3.To articulate the theory guiding groups and to differentiate Centering groups from other therapy, education, and support groups 4.To identify leadership components which contribute to success in leading Centering groups 5.To understand the potential contribution of the model to the education of professional students 6.To develop a plan for the design and implementation of a Centering program within various agencies CHI will work with you so as to help assure the greatest success in implementing the Centering program.
